At the end of year 1, children complete a national phonics screening check.  This is designed to ensure that children have grasped early reading skills needed to build reading fluency and comprehension.  If children do not meet the expected standard in year 1, they will receive additional support in year 2 ready to re-take the check at the end of year 2.
